Gift Basket Raffle

Help us give back to others by buying tickets through November 27 for a chance to win an exquisite basket.  All proceeds benefit our senior support services.  The winners will be selected during Santa’s Arrival on Sunday, November 27 and notified the next day.

Medicare Open Enrollment

The Council on Aging HICAP program will provide one-on-one personal counseling by trained volunteers to help seniors in choosing their health plan for the 2017 Medicare Open Enrollment. The program is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 15. Registration is required and available by calling 949-470-3062.

It’s Your Money

This series offers objective education about your money; fixed-income investments; annuities; mutual funds; and long-term care insurance.  (No sales of products or services.) Registration is required and available by calling 949-470-3062. The next program is at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 3.

Cholesterol Medications-Are They Safe?

For the past two decades, cholesterol-lowering medications have helped to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Recent studies suggest statins may increase risk of diabetes and decrease cognition. Dr. Blanca Bisuna, a Mission Hospital family medicine physician, will discuss the controversy and provide information about current cholesterol-lowering recommendations. Constitution 101

Who were the “Founding Fathers?” What are the values and ideals found in the Declaration of Independence? What happened at the Constitutional Convention in the summer of 1787? Get the answers to these questions and more by attending Constitution 101 presented by retired history teacher Bob Hayes. The free program is at 4 p.m. Thursdays November 3-17. Flu Shot Clinic

Free Flu shots for people 18 and older are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, November 4 as the vaccine is available from O.C. Health Care Agency.  Drive-through shots are available for the mobility impaired.  Shots are free but donations are appreciated.

Soothing Journey through Meditation

Experience various topics and types of meditations infused with positive energy in this two-session course at 7 p.m. November 8 and November 22.  Sessions are educational, experiential and soothing.  Cost is $5 per session. Post-Election Investment Roadmap

Learn about timeless investment principles and traps to avoid in the New Year at 10 a.m. on November 10.  Stocks, bonds, ETFs and mutual funds will be discussed by investment advisor Scott Walker. Registration is required and available by calling 949-470-3062.

Fall Meditation Series

Studies show thankfulness can increase our well-being. On Tuesday, November 15, you will learn tips associated with increased energy, optimism and empathy.  This two-hour program includes meditation led by instructor Tammy Descoteaux. Registration is required and available by calling 949-470-3062.

Cardiac Issues-Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (A Fib), the most common type of heart rhythm disorder, affects one in 10 people.  If not treated, complications can lead to serious conditions such as heart failure or stroke. On November 15 at 1 p.m., Dr. Shyam Bhaskar will discuss causes, symptoms, risks and treatment options. Registration is required and available by calling 949-470-3062.

COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive condition that encompasses several medical conditions with about 12 million people diagnosed in the U.S.  On November 15 at 1 p.m., Dr. Tauseff Qureshi, a pulmonologist with Mission Heritage Medical Group, will discuss the causes, treatments and how to improve the quality of life for folks diagnosed with the disease. Personal Safety for Seniors

Mission Viejo Police Services will discuss tips to help you stay safe while home or away. Topics will include protecting yourself from unscrupulous contractors, dealing with solicitors, online safety, how and when to call law enforcement and more. The program is at 10 a.m. November 17. Annual Thanksgiving Feast

Seniors can enjoy a festive celebration at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23 with a traditional turkey dinner and all the trimmings.  A reservation is required by November 16 and is available by calling 949-470-3063. Cost is $4.50 for seniors; and $6 general admission.
